Asking to Pledge

Hey [name],
 
I wanted to follow up on our conversation and send you some more information about effective altruism and global poverty charity work. I'd appreciate if you found 10 minutes to go through this (no rush).
 
The Problem

  • The world is wealthier than ever but 600 million people still live in extreme poverty
  • Every 5 seconds a child in the developing world dies from a preventable poverty-related cause
  • With so many charities and causes out there people don’t know where to give their money

The Solution 

  • Those of us in developed nations, particularly those from elite schools, are well-positioned to help. 
  • Effective altruism is a research field which uses high-quality evidence and careful reasoning to work out how to help others as much as possible
  • One for the World is a movement on 40 plus campuses striving to make effective charitable giving part of our everyday lives by asking undergrads to pledge 1-5% of their future income to highly effective charities

  • GiveWell is a charity navigator which identifies the charities that save the most lives per dollar
  • Charities are determined “most effective” by 4 main criteria: evidence, cost-effectiveness, room for more funding, and transparency. Read more about the selection process here.

What You Can Do

  • The fundamental idea behind One for the World and donating to global poverty is that for young graduates like us, our wellbeing/happiness will be the exact same with 95-99% of our income - for example, whether we earn 64K versus 65K. But that 1,000 dollars can do an incredible amount of good to innocent people in dire need of help. 
  • I would propose that you consider taking the 1 for the world pledge. This means that when you begin earning an income, you would donate 1 or 2 or 3% of that monthly earning to highly effective charities.
  • We encourage monthly donations so that effective charitable giving becomes a common and long-term practice. The ultimate goal of effective altruism is for everyone in developed nations to recognize the enormous impact of small donations to effective organizations and act on it. 
  • Pledges can be set for a later date (e.g. your start date) and are editable, delayable, or refundable at any time.
